Using the Internet to research and purchase term life insurance

Term life insurance is, by definition, life insurance for those who have a temporary need for it. It is most especially ideal for working people, both men and women who are concerned about protecting their family's financial future in the event of untimely death. But it can be just as useful for seniors who are looking to intelligently to minimize estate taxes. The internet has become the preferred place to both research and buy term life insurance because it is so easy to compare rates from so many companies at once. You will also be able to get as much information as you need from unbiased sources--something that can only help you if you are thinking about making a purchase.

Who can get term life insurance?

It is important to note that you can not apply for an amount of term life insurance that is deemed to be greater than the value of your entire estate. Most life insurers do not require any validation of one's estate's worth for policies with a face value under a certain amount, but may after a claim is filed. Additionally, one must also have what is know as an insurable interest before taking out a life insurance policy on someone else. It is assumed that one has an insurable interest for spouses, children, key employees, business partners, great grand children, and possibly other relationships.

Is term life insurance better than Whole Life?

It is distinct from the other primary type of life insurance called whole life or permanent life. There are several categories of permanent polices including Universal Life, both of these products is beyond the scope of the article except to say that term life insurance is considerably cheaper and does not build cash value. There are instances when a permanent policy might be best for a particular client's needs, but most life insurance experts today agree that term life insurance is a better value for most people.

How much does it cost?

One reason is that it significantly less expensive. What a lot of people may not know is that it is generally easy to qualify for, and that even relatively large amounts (less than $500,000) can be had at surprisingly affordable rates. For example, a 40 year old man can obtain a $500,000 30 year term life insurance policy for as little as $55 per month. For most people, this would be enough to cover estate taxes, burial expenses, mortgage, and college tuition.

In the above example, this would apply for someone who would qualify for the best possible rating class known as Preferred Best. In most cases, however, people will qualify for the standard rating class which would make it more expensive. Be aware that if you go online to get term life insurance quotes, you will likely be presented rates from the least expensive rating class. For this reason, it is better to assume from the outset that you are going to qualify for the Standard class and continue from there. If you happen to qualify for preferred best, then you can always increase the face value or term length to match your budget.

To lower the premium, one of three things can be done:

  1. Apply for a shorter term length
  2. Apply for a lesser face amount

  3. Improve health

What are some ways to save money on term life insurance?

The first two really need no further explication as they are self evident. But improving one's health is something one can proactively do to lower the costs of term life insurance. Unless one is applying for no exam life insurance (which is quick and easy but also very expensive ) the life insurance company is going to request what is called a paramed. During a paramed exam, a trained health care worker, usually a nurse, will come to your home or business to take a blood and urine sample. These samples will be tested for cholesterol, triglycerides, illicit drugs, nicotine, and many other things besides.

If you know in advance what is being tested for, and you make necessary changes in order to get these numbers within the desired range, there is every possibility that you may be able to qualify for a better life insurance rating class than would otherwise be possible.

Even if you have life insurance policy in force for which you are paying premiums under one qualifying category, you can reapply for a lower rate once your health improves. This is possible even for ex-smokers.
